Papaya Playa Project, together with Design Hotels™, has set out to discover a new form of hospitality, merging local culture, and sustainability to set the stage for original and aspirational hospitality experiences. Most importantly the Project is a cornerstone in the manifestation of our vision of a sustainable and responsible Tulum that can be an example of hospitality development around the world.

PPP MISSION

In December 2011, Design Hotels™ ventured to conceive a destination in paradise along the Mexican Caribbean coast on what we now call Papaya Playa Project. Together with Emilio Heredia, they created a space for like-minded, creative individuals to unwind and connect with self and nature.

DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE

The design of the hotel evokes the traditional Mayan way of building. Papaya Playa Project adopted “Chukum,” a technique used by the Maya to cool the interiors of buildings made principally with the resin of a tree with the same name.

This is used on the palapas, as well as on the interiors as an insulation system. Our architecture is always functional and simple, using local traditions and wisdom, allowing Guests to interact more with Nature as the principal. The interiors are all designed with local traditional materials and textiles use by the Mexican natives from different regions.

THE MAIN FEATURE OF PAPAYA BEACH

It's service space is distributed around the club to include a double-decker bar that advances toward the ocean, overhanging the beach; multilevel semi-amphitheatre with private seating enclaves with the infinity view ahead and above; two spacious oceanfront palapas; a 360° wooden tower rising above the property offering a vantage-point private table area; and a generous stretch of beach appointed with serviceable sun beds and shaded hanging beds palapitas.

ROCA RESTAURANT

The new eatery in Playa Solar Beach Club serves indulgent raw-vegan and raw seafood bowls.

Fresh, organic, and mostly local ingredients are prepared to preserve their enzymes, macronutrients, and flavor, on a deck overlooking the sea and our beautiful stretch of sand.

SPA AND WELLNESS

Roxy Robinson told the Roxstar by Centred & Tabula Rasa Wellness Retreat Team that she had the best massage of her life at the spa. The Spa is voted as one of Our Roxstar Luxury Group Favourites.

The spa menu at Papaya Playa Project offers healing massages and indulgent treatments right in the heart of the jungle and away from the city noises.

The spa treatments use organic and natural local ingredients such as coconut, honey, aloe and a special mayan clay.

PPP Offerings

The Temazcal is a traditional Mayan steam bath that stimulates the lymphatic systems in order to cleanse your respiratory tract and improve blood circulation. This is believed to be the ultimate relaxation experience to renew your body and your mind. We didn’t get to experience this during our stay but if we had more time we definitely would have loved to experience the traditional steam bath for sure.

The 87 key hotel is the premier barefoot luxury hotel in Tulum, preserving 93% of the jungle and 900 meters of pristine beach. Several sustainability programs are in progress, aiming to become a zero-footprint property shortly.

Our cabanas, casitas and villas are comfortable and relaxed, built with local materials and techniques. Our project is ideal for creatives, adventurers, and spiritual seekers.
